International Register of Loneliness
|
This International Register of Loneliness is being established from the Room for the Study Of Loneliness by the Faculty of In-humanities. The Register is open to all professional artists and other professionals (scholars, curators, collectors, et cetera) in the practice of autonomous and contemporary art. (Contemporary art is here meant as a distinctive mode of art practice.)
The practice of contemporary art is characterized by different perspectives. That of the artist-professional themselves, alongside the perspectives of policy makers, commerce and institutions, and the society at large. Today, this means that autonomous artists often work on the margins of society. Their practice does not easily fit within the prevailing economic perspective nor can it be easily understood from economic motives. This causes forms of loneliness.
Art practice also requires loneliness. The artist-professional must be enabled to consider both "the world" and art practice from their personal mental and emotional space. While discourse is fundamental to the existence and functioning of a practice, the personal relationship to it is equally essential. This is found and shaped in solitude.
With this register, The Faculty aims to further explore both the aforementioned aspects of art practice and the nature of loneliness itself (of the artist-professional in particular). In addition, with the register, The Faculty aims to make visible the extent of loneliness among artist-professionals - and raise awareness of it. The Faculty also wants to use the register to explore and develop perspectives that may lead to a different and better understanding of autonomous and contemporary art practice, appropriate to the challenges of the environmental and climate crisis in relation to the economic system employed.
To be included in the Register of Loneliness, please complete the form here below. The Faculty will verify the professionality of your practice by remote review of the information you provide. Inclusion in The Register confirms your professionalism at the time of your inclusion and provides recognition for the forms of loneliness you experience and have experienced in and through art practice.
