Born in the Frisian town of Wolvega in 1970, my first memories are images of deep green meadows with yellow dandelions against the reddish-brown, brick walls of terraced houses and the old Rivella factory, orange roof tiles against blue skies with drifting cumulus clouds, and large, dark oak, beech and poplar trees around farmhouses.
Meaning is a key concept for my work. The Dutch word for "art", "kunst", comes etymologically from "kunde", which means: "knowledge" or "science". The English word comes from the Latin word "ars", which means the same. Martin Heidegger wrote in 'The origin of the work of art': 'In the fine arts it is not the art that is fine, but it is so called because it produces beauty. Beauty, however, is reserved to aesthetics. Truth, on the other hand, belongs to logic." Art is about discovering and developing knowledge and insight. Form and content cannot be found separately, but serve the purpose of understanding.
As an (inter)media artist; artiste pluriel, or in other words; contemporary artist, I am not bound to one medium. The main medium has no tangible or thing-like properties. It is thought, or language, itself. The image is a formulation in which the perceived form is the basis of sense and sentential context. It is the opening of a space of meaning. Formal logic is based on grammatical principles.
I understand my artisthood as Ad Reinhardt once put it: 'No art as a commodity or a jobbery. Art is not the spiritual side of business. ' (Monk's Pond # 1, 1968) An artist's professionalism cannot be measured by turnover, market share and audience reach, but by the quality and way of working.
